refuse

My friend Averell said that a postcard I sent her had a word whited out.

I had written her about the brown beaches in Montevideo. I mentioned that the reason they were so polluted was because the former dictator had ordered the direct deposit of refuse into the ocean.

"Refuse" was the censored word.

The Uruguayan postal service also refuses to send pre-sealed mail; they glue each envelope shut themselves. They also only ship boxes that they sell at the post office. This means that if they run out, you can't ship Christmas presents home.
